Portfolio Update: Lesson Learned!
at 2005-12-12 18:19:40

Remember all that talk about YHOO breaking it's 35 resistance level and being ready to soar? Was I right or what? It's jumped up to around 38 and still could go higher. With 1275 shares at an average cost of 34.21, that would put me up close to $5000. Now after patting me on the back for the insight, can you please hit me over the head with a hammer! I pulled out at 35.73 for a decent gain because I wanted to go with an Avian flu play that didn't really show much technically, BCRX. That stock hasn't done much, while YHOO has been on fire. I learned a great lesson from this trade. Stick with what you have conviction in due to hard work and research, rather than something exciting on CNBC.

I currently have a 1000 share position in BCRX. Bought at 13.86 and it is currently at 13.87 . . .what a gain! I'm going to stick with it just in case there is some flu news.

Made a trade today that taught me another lesson. Had my eye on Housevalues (SOLD) looking for a breakout over resistance. It did just that and I bought 1000 shares at 15.03. I sold at 15.62 for no reason other than to lock a profit, even though the momentum was good and it doesn't hit a resistance point until 18. $600 profit is nice, but it kept on going to 16.30, just as I had thought it would. I need to learn to stick with trades that I believe in.

Finally, I bought 300 shares of QCOM at 40.37 towards the end of the day in anticipation of the earnings announcement. Always a risky move, but I felt strongly that QCOM would not disappoint. The results were mixed, missing by a penny this quarter but raising guidances for the future. I hope the latter is what the marke focuses on tomorrow, as I plan to hold this one for a few days. I think it could go back to where it was trading before the selloff, in the 45 range. The European legal mess does complicate things though.

My watchlist stocks for tomorrow all have a common theme, breaking out over resistance points on high volume:

ARBX, BOOM, IVIL, KFRC, CYCL, OXPS

A little nervous about QCOM tomorrow. I'll keep the Pepto close by.

Thinking Out Loud, No Stocks Allowed:
*Watched Crash this weekend. A little forced, but still a great movie.
*Worried about Scalito. He may end up even more conservative than Rehnquist.
*NBA is back! The Wolves looked great today. Watch out for the Bucks. Bogut and Ford look out of sight.
*Prison Break is the best show on TV.
